People often look to leaders to guide and teach them. Having others depend on you can lead to some high-pressure situations. There are some tips and tricks leaders can use to guide others and get the job done, no matter how high the stakes are.

External Pressures

Leaders often have people relying on them to get things done. This can sometimes leave a leader feeling overwhelmed and anxious. When external pressures get to be too much, follow these steps to get back on track.

Delegate– All too often, leaders think that they have to accomplish everything on their own. Delegating responsibilities to other qualified people is one aspect of a true leader. Tasks will get accomplished quicker, and others will feel good that you trusted them enough to depend on them to help.
Be organized– Doing things in succession will keep you from having to go back and fix things later. Before beginning any major task, make an action plan that outlines exactly what needs to be done and who needs to do it.
Know when enough is enough- Sometimes, upper management expects things to be done that just aren’t possible. Don’t be afraid to speak up and offer alternatives to unreasonable requests.
Internal Pressures

Leaders often feel that they are primarily responsible for everything. While it’s true that leaders do hold a great deal of liability, worrying about it to the point that it makes you sick will not do any good. Things a leader can do to remain calm are:

Take one task at a time and not be overwhelmed by the ultimate goal.
Keep up with deadlines, but don’t be afraid to ask for an extension if it means the job won’t get done properly.
Be prepared for change and know that things are going to come up that might not align with the original plan.
Find a balance between pushing one’s self to achieve a goal and going too far and jeopardizing one’s mental and physical health.

Leaders have been known to face as much pressure as professional athletes and military personnel. Remaining calm during high-pressure situations and successfully completing the task at hand is the true definition of a leader.
